The shocking death of 53 infants in the last 11 days at Sishu Bhavan in Cuttack have raised questions about poor infrastructure and shortage of doctors in major hospitals in Odisha.
'I kept begging the doctors to put my three year old on the ventilator. But the doctors and nurses kept saying no ventilator was available. When the breathing apparatus ultimately became available, it was too late.'
A day after Odisha government refused to accept the central assistance for health care facilities at the Sishu Bhawan, the paediatric hospital in Cuttack registered four more crib deaths on Thursday, taking the toll to 63 in past two weeks.
"The nine deaths were reported in the neonatal care centre of hospital since last morning. All of them were kept in incubators as they were premature babies," Superintendent of the hospital, Dr Laxmikant Dash said.
